Frankfurt, Germany This panoramic photograph of downtown Frankfurt was taken by James Blakeway. It features a twilight view of downtown Frankfurt as seen looking across the Main River. On the right is Frankfurt’s tallest building, the Comerz Bank. The building with the white lit, crown-shaped top is the DG Bank Tower. The Romans founded Frankfurt in the first century AD. It was the virtual capital of Germany from 1816 to 1866 and is now an industrial, commercial, financial and transportation center. During World War II (1939-1945), the city was badly damaged by bombing but has since been rebuilt into one of the world’s great international cities
